City Statement on Use of Uniformed City Employees in Campaign Materials

The City of Salem is aware of political campaign materials circulating in our community that feature photographs of City employees in uniform. The employees pictured were not aware that their images would be used in these materials and did not provide permission for their use in this context.

The City of Salem respects the right of individuals, including off duty employees, and organizations to participate in the political process. However, we recognize the importance of ensuring that campaign materials do not unintentionally create an impression that City employees, their departments, or the City itself endorse a particular candidate or political position.

The City of Salem does not endorse candidates for elected office, and the appearance of City employees in campaign materials should not be interpreted as an endorsement by the employees, their departments, or the City. We have asked the campaign in question to cease using the images depicting City employees.

Our employees serve the entire community and are committed to doing so, regardless of political affiliation or viewpoint.

The City remains committed to serving all members of our community, maintaining public trust, and ensuring that City resources and personnel are represented fairly and accurately.
