The 7th Meeting of Heads of Ministries and Agencies of SCO Member States Responsible for Environmental Protection takes place in Bishkek
On April 3, 2026, the 7th meeting of the heads of ministries and agencies of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation member states responsible for environmental protection issues was held in Bishkek in a hybrid format under the chairmanship of the Kyrgyz side. Theme: "25 Years: Together for a Sustainable World, Development, and Prosperity."
The heads of delegations discussed current topics of cooperation in the relevant field, including the exchange of experience and best practices in areas such as climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity conservation, the development of a green and low-carbon economy, waste management, combating air pollution, glacier preservation, and water resource management.

In his speech SCO Deputy Secretary-General Sohail Khan noted that interaction in the field of environmental protection is one of the key areas of the Organization's activities and drew attention to the need to ensure the practical implementation of the agreements reached.
During the meeting a Joint Statement was signed and an Initiative on Improving Air Quality was approved. The outcome documents are intended to ensure the further development of cooperation among SCO member states on the environmental track.

As a landmark event on the sidelines of the Meeting it's participants planted Tien Shan spruce seedlings in the Ala-Archa State Park in order to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the SCO. As noted by the Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic Akyl Toktobaev, "Kyrgyzstan has laid the foundation for the 'SCO Green Belt' initiative, aimed at preserving natural ecosystems, expanding forest and green zones, and strengthening measures to adapt to climate change."
