Cal State East Bay's men's basketball team defeated Point Loma Monday night at Pioneer Gymnasium, punching its ticket to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight and extending a season that is one of the most remarkable in the country.
The victory keeps the Pioneers perfect at 33-0, making them the sole undefeated men's NCAA team at any level.
For a campus that had not hosted NCAA postseason basketball in nearly 40 years, the past week has transformed Pioneer Gymnasium into one of the most electric scenes in college sports.
The Pioneers' success follows a record-setting year in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, where East Bay became the first team in conference history to complete a flawless 22-0 league schedule before capturing the program's first CCAA Tournament championship.
Head coach Bryan Rooney, the CCAA Coach of the Year, has guided a team that has excelled not only on the court but in the classroom. Even during the intensity of the national tournament, players continued attending classes while maintaining a 3.54 cumulative team GPA.
Now the Pioneers move on to the NCAA Division II Basketball Championships in Pittsburgh, PA, March 25-28, carrying a perfect record and the energy of a region that has rallied behind them.
For Cal State East Bay, this is no longer just a winning streak.
It's a historic run - and the nation is taking notice.
