For the fourth consecutive year, total enrollment is on the rise at The University of New Mexico, and for the sixth year in a row, first-year student registrations grew as well, according to data released for the fall 2025 semester.
Total enrollment at the Albuquerque campus grew to 23,955 for fall 2025, an increase of 3.13% over last year's total of 23,228. Total enrollment across all UNM campuses for fall 2025 stands at 28,285, an increase of 4.5% from last year.
There were 3,814 new first-year student registrations at the Albuquerque campus for fall 2025, which surpasses last year's record-setting 3,642 - and the largest incoming class in the University's history.
"Fall 2025 enrollment numbers at UNM reflect continued growth at the institution, marking the sixth consecutive year of growth in the incoming class and the fourth consecutive year of total enrollment growth," said Dan Garcia, UNM's vice president for enrollment management. "It's great to see more students choosing UNM for their education."
Also seeing a continued increase the last several years is the number of UNM students who are retained, what is sometimes referred to as the "persistence rate." Third-semester retention increased from 74.55% for the fall 2023 cohort to 75.56% for the fall 2024 semester cohort. This continues an upward trend of third-semester retention since the fall 2021 cohort.
UNM's first-year class showed increases from last year in Hispanic students, up 4.82%, and Asian American students, up 9.16%. International student numbers held steady, with 90 incoming first-year, non-U.S. resident students, same as 2024.
Fall 2025 branch campus total enrollment stands at 4,330, which is a 12.56% increase from last fall. Broken down by campus, enrollment at Gallup is 1,769 for fall 2025; 335 at Los Alamos; 836 at Taos; and Valencia at 1,390 students, which represents a 51.58% increase for that campus.
"These historic enrollment gains reflect the confidence students and families place in The University of New Mexico to deliver an education of value, opportunity, and impact," said UNM President Garnett Stokes. "Each year, more students are choosing UNM because they see a vibrant campus community, world-class academic programs, and a commitment to student success that extends across New Mexico and beyond. I am proud of the work our faculty and staff do every day to support our students, and I am especially inspired by the newest class of Lobos who are already making history as the largest incoming class in UNM's history."
