Washington, DC - Today, Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03) released the following statement after the United States Supreme Court issued two decisions, eroding protections for immigrants with Temporary Protected Status and asylum seekers at the border.
"Since they returned to power, the Trump-Miller white nationalist administration has waged a war on our immigrant communities, trying to define who gets to be an American and who gets to experience the promise of safety and refuge. Trump and Miller seek to deny immigrants safety, even if they have lived here for decades, even if America is the place they call home, and even if their lives depend on asylum.
And today, Trump's loyalists in the Supreme Court have joined forces with him to deny immigrants' internationally recognized human rights and advance an authoritarian, white supremacist agenda at home. The Supreme Court's decisions put more than 350,000 TPS holders at risk of deportation and countless more asylum seekers' lives in danger. Not because the conditions that made immigrants seek refuge in our country have changed, but because they do not fit Trump and Miller's idea of who deserves to be safe, who has the right to dignity, and who gets to be an American.
After years of uncertainty, too many families are still waiting for the security America promised and that they deserve. Immigrants belong. And no one can deny that immigrants today are also the inheritors of the promise of America - just like so many of my colleagues' ancestors were. Congress has an obligation to prove to every immigrant community that they are seen, heard, and valued. Today, we must bring to the floor the Dream and Promise Act. It is time to create pathways to citizenship for all."
