Gil Soffer and Christopher Hitchins Discuss Katten 2030 Strategy and London Growth With Law360

Katten Chairman Gil Soffer and London Managing Partner Christopher Hitchins spoke with Law360 about Katten 2030, the firm's strategic plan focused on growth, collaboration and profitability. Gil said the firm intends to pursue the plan without private equity investment or a major merger. "We don't intend to become part of some very large law firm that would effectively swallow us up - that's not in the cards." As the firm grows from about 650 attorneys toward 800, he added, "We want to bring in talent, but not just the oneses and the twoses, ideally we take on teams."

Turning to London, Chris noted that the London office was founded 21 years ago through a combination with a hedge fund boutique. On future hiring, he said, "We know that we need to be bigger in certain practice areas. We know that if we can leverage the opportunities properly, then we can hire people in, and that can spin off opportunities for other practice groups as well." Gil added, "We want a deeper bench of corporate. We want to be able to take advantage of the platform that we have in the US for cross-border transactions."

On competing for talent in a crowded London market, Gil said, "We give a lot of runway to our lawyers. We give serious resources to them. We encourage them to take advantage of their connections and their entrepreneurial spirit and to build here." He highlighted collaboration across practices as another pillar of the strategy and noted that cross-practice client and sector teams and a compensation system rewarding shared and team credit reinforce it. "It puts a premium on each of us finding ways to work with those outside of our practice groups and trying to build business."

Turning to artificial intelligence, Gil noted that clients have moved from discouraging artificial intelligence (AI) to effectively expecting it, a shift Katten expects to drive efficiency and alternative fee arrangements. "It's changing so rapidly," he said. "What you use today might not be what you use in six months' time."
