Traffic Alert: Canal Street Viaduct Project Updates - New Traffic Patterns in Effect

CHICAGO - The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) announced a series of traffic reconfigurations near Union Station beginning Dec. 15 as structural improvements to the Canal Street viaduct and roadway corridor continue. Changes will be implemented in three phases over the next two weeks, with construction crews performing day and night work.

On Dec.15, the east side of Canal Street from Adams to Madison will close, with traffic maintained on the west side of Canal. Pedestrian access will be maintained on the west sidewalk; the east sidewalk will be closed.

Phase 2 - Jackson Boulevard to Harrison Street

On Dec. 19th, northbound Canal Street between Van Buren and Jackson will move from the west side of the street to the east side.

Improved Access - Canal Street between Adams and Jackson

During the week of Dec. 22, the west side of Canal Street between Adams and Jackson will reopen, improving vehicular access to Union Station.

Additional Information

  • CTA bus service will continue down Jackson Boulevard without disruption to the bus terminal.
  • Pedestrian access to Union Station will be maintained throughout all phases.
