The University of Toledo Medical Center was recently recognized by Nursegrid as one of the country's top workplaces for nurses.

Nursegrid, a digital media platform for nurses, surveyed more than 50,000 nurses across the United States, asking them to rate on a five-point scale whether they would recommend their workplace to another nurse.

UTMC earned a 4.4-star rating, indicating the hospital has created a strong environment where nurses feel supported, respected and motivated to stay.

"We know that when nurses feel supported and engaged, it directly impacts the care we provide," said Kurt Kless, UTMC's chief nursing officer. "This recognition shows that we're building a workplace where nurses want to stay, grow and continue making a difference for our patients."

UTMC was the only hospital in metro Toledo - and one of just seven in the state of Ohio - to be recognized on the Nursegrid Great Workplaces for Nurses list. In all, 204 hospitals and other healthcare facilities made the list.

The recognition from Nursegrid is the second national accolade UTMC has received this year for its support of its nursing workforce.

In January, the Heart and Vascular Care Unit at UTMC earned a bronze-level Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses for providing high-quality patient care in a supportive work environment

UTMC is one of 13 hospital systems in Ohio to hold a Beacon Award.

That broader commitment to supporting nurses across their careers also is reflected in the hospital's retention rate for first-year nurses.

As the only hospital in the area to offer a 12-month residency program for new nurses, UTMC significantly outperforms industry benchmarks for first-year retention, with more than 91% of nurses in the residency program remaining at the hospital after their first year.

Nationally, approximately 18% to 25% of newly licensed nurses leave their job within their first year.
