EFTA contributes to peer review of Albanian statistical system

From 23 to 27 March 2026, experts from Eurostat and EFTA, represented by Statistics Norway, conducted a peer review of the National Statistical System of Albania. This review reinforces Albania's progress towards a stronger, more reliable statistical system aligned with EU standards, supporting its EU accession process.

During the mission, the peer review team engaged in different discussions on the quality of official statistics in Albania, professional independence of statistical authorities, transparency and user trust. The experts will now prepare a detailed assessment report with concrete recommendations for further improvements for Albania to consider on its accession path to the EU.

The purpose of peer reviews is to monitor and assess compliance with the European Statistics Code of Practice (ESCoP) and its implementation. They aim to support national statistical institutes and other statistical authorities in the development, production and dissemination of high-quality official statistics. Additionally, peer reviews identify areas where further support is needed and provide recommendations to improve compliance with the ESCoP.

This mission is part of EFTA's technical cooperation work programme in the field of statistics for 2026, which was approved by the EFTA Council early in 2026. The final peer review report will be published on EFTA's website.
