This weekend, our city experienced yet another heartbreaking reminder of the devastating toll of gun violence.

I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Terrell J. Granberg, whose life was taken far too soon. I extend my heartfelt condolences to Terrell's family, friends, classmates, teammates, and everyone who loved him. He was a loving father, a recent high school graduate, and a talented young man with a bright future ahead of him.

I also extend my prayers and support to the woman who was shot outside Alberta Street Pub on Sunday evening, as well as everyone else injured in acts of violence across our city this weekend. I am praying for healing, comfort, and strength for every victim and every family affected.

Gun violence continues to rob families of their loved ones, traumatize our neighborhoods, and leave lasting scars on our community. Every life lost is a tragedy. Every person injured represents a family forever changed.

As your Councilor, I remain committed to advancing policies that make our neighborhoods safer, strengthen community trust, and address both the immediate and long-term causes of violence. Public safety is about prevention, opportunity, accountability, and ensuring every Portlander can live, work, gather, and raise their family without fear.

To every family mourning today, please know that Portland mourns with you. May we honor those affected not only with our words, but through our actions.

- Councilor Loretta Smith
Portland City Council, District 1
