PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR HOME AFFAIRS, SECURITY AND EMPLOYMENT Malta supports Libya in civil protection mission

The Ministry for Home Affairs, Security and Employment, through Malta's Civil Protection Department, has deployed a specialised team to Libya to support the recently established Libyan National Centre for Emergencies and Disaster Management. This initiative further underscores Malta's strong commitment to international cooperation and effective emergency response assistance.

The team, which is in Libya between 15 and 18 February 2026, is composed of three senior Civil Protection officers and one Sergeant from the Malta Police Force and is engaged in two main missions.

In the first mission, the team carried out a detailed investigation into substantial cracks that appeared in the Isbeya area, approximately 50 kilometres from Tripoli. Through this work, the team provided a preliminary assessment to better understand the nature and cause of these fissures, with the aim of supporting local communities and preventing potential structural failures.

In the second mission, the team is also assisting in the collection of water samples from a lake in Zuwara, near the Tunisian border. This analysis is essential to assess water quality and availability for the local population.

Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Employment Byron Camilleri stated that the Civil Protection Department strengthened through sustained investment and a highly capable workforce, is today not only delivering the highest level of service to the Maltese public but is also well positioned to extend its assistance beyond Malta's shores. He added that the experience and expertise gained by officers during such international missions continue to enhance the Department's operational capacity, enabling them to serve the Maltese people with even greater effectiveness and professionalism upon their return.
