On January 28, 2026, Chinese Ambassador Xiao Qian hosted a New Year Media Briefing and Gathering. More than Twenty media outlets, including the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, The Australian, The Sydney Morning Herald, Xinhua News Agency, China Media Group, and Phoenix TV attended the briefing.
Ambassador Xiao stated that the China-Australia relations made progresses in stability, with political mutual trust deepened, economic and trade cooperation improved, vibrant cultural exchanges, and strategic interests increasingly entwined. With the successful conclusion of the 14th Five-Year Plan, China's economic output has crossed key thresholds, which promoted Chinese modernization yielded fruitful results. The recommendations for the 15th Five-Year Plan sculpted the blueprint for China's economic and social development over the next five years, and brought more opportunities for China-Australia cooperation. Faced with increasing global instability, China has firmly upheld the authority and stature of the United Nations, continuously providing stability and certainty to the world. China wishes to work with the Australian side to enhance mutual trust, handle differences properly, and promote the China-Australia relations to achieve more developments.
Ambassador Xiao also took questions from journalists on various issues including China-Australia relations, Taiwan question, the international and regional situation, etc.
