AgriS receives second Bonsucro certification as TTC Attapeu becomes certified

4th March 2026

TTC Attapeu (TTCA), a sugarcane mill in Laos, has become the first mill in the country to achieve Bonsucro certification against the Bonsucro Production Standard and the Bonsucro Chain of Custody Standard. This milestone marks AgriS's second Bonsucro-certified operation, following the certification of its sugarcane mill in Tay Ninh, Vietnam.

Located in the Attapeu province, TTCA plays an important role in the cross-border agricultural value chain - with a total area of 12,860 hectares and production capacity of 7000 tonnes of sugar per day.

From the outset, TTCA has focused on building large-scale, high-value sugarcane production while integrating sustainable farming practices throughout its operations. The mill uses biomass energy to help power its production processes, helping to reduce emissions and improve resource efficiency, reinforcing AgriS's commitment to responsible production and its leadership in sustainable sugarcane farming in the region.

TTCA's journey to certification

TTCA's certification journey reflects AgriS's broader approach to quality, sustainability, and positive social impact across the sugarcane value chain.
Establishing large-scale agricultural operations in Laos comes with its challenges, particularly in areas considered high-risk for labour and human rights. Rather than relying only on local regulations, TTCA chose to adopt internationally recognised sustainability standards to guide its development and operations.

With strategic direction from AgriS, support from financial institutions (like Deutsche Investitions Und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH), and the strong commitment from the TTCA team, the mill went beyond local legal requirements to meet the requirements in the Bonsucro Production Standard.

To achieve Bonsucro certification, TTCA improved production efficiency, reduced waste, and strengthened land and water management practices across both its agricultural and milling activities.

One example is the use of red-eyed bees as part of the mill's Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. These bees help control pests naturally, reducing the need for chemical pesticides and protecting the surrounding ecosystem. This approach also creates employment opportunities for women, without exposing them to harmful chemicals.

Combined with crop rotation and intercropping practices, these methods support biodiversity and help farms become more resilient to climate change.

Creating value for farmers and communities

Certification is not only about how sugarcane is produced, but it's also about the people who produce it. TTCA works closely with certified farmers to improve productivity and income while promoting fair labour practices, safe working conditions, and respect for workers' rights from the field to the final product.

As Ms. Phiengphattay Kingkeo, a participating farmer, reflects:

"Before the mill's investment program, much of our land was left unused. Since joining the sugarcane program, we have received advance funding, machinery support, and technical guidance. Last harvest, my family earned over 100 million Kip, which allowed us to invest in our children's education and better farming equipment for the next season."

TTCA also supports nearby communities through onsite power generation and water treatment systems, providing access to electricity and clean water in areas where public infrastructure is limited.

Looking ahead

As the first sugarcane mill in Laos to achieve Bonsucro certification, TTCA demonstrates that global sustainability standards can be successfully implemented even in challenging contexts.

Looking ahead, AgriS remains committed to its Net Zero target by 2035, continuing to embed sustainability across production, supply chain management, social responsibility, and community development. Through close collaboration between operations in Vietnam and Laos, AgriS aims to strengthen the global competitiveness of regional agricultural products and contribute to a more resilient, inclusive, and low-carbon future for the sugarcane sector.
