Arbor Day is celebrated in Nevada on the last Friday of April each year and highlights the importance of trees, encouraging their planting and preservation. The City's Urban Forestry team currently maintains over 29,000 publicly owned trees in City parks and along public streets.
"Arbor Day is such an important event for our community as the City continues to expand Reno's tree canopy, creating much needed oxygen and shade to keep our area cool," said Urban Forestry Commission Liaison and Ward 2 Councilmember Naomi Duerr. "I encourage our residents to attend this year's festivities, help us recognize our tree heroes, and learn more about the importance of the trees in our area."
The celebration will include remarks from City officials and other community leaders on the importance of trees and our urban canopy. Following remarks, there will be a ceremonial tree planting, recognition of an art display of birdhouses from the students at Bernice Mathews Elementary School, and a 2026 ReLEAF Reno awards presentation.
The following week, on May 2 from 8 a.m. to noon, there will be a volunteer tree planting event happening at Teglia's Paradise Park in partnership with Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful. A total of 31 trees of 18 different species will be planted around the park. These trees were selected for climate resilience and to increase diversity in the City's tree canopy.
