Twenty years ago, Walmart introduced something remarkably simple: a 30-day supply of select generic prescriptions for $4.
At the time, the cost of prescription medications was putting essential treatments out of reach for too many people. Walmart saw an opportunity to do what we do best: lower costs for customers and use our footprint to make something people need more accessible. The $4 generic program helped reset expectations for affordable prescription access across the pharmacy industry. It showed that commonly used medications could be offered at a dramatically lower price, challenging the industry to rethink what affordable access to prescription medications could look like.
Over the past 20 years, the $4 generic program is estimated to have saved U.S. customers billions of dollars on their prescriptions.
But the part of that story that matters most isn't the number.
It's the people behind it.
For one customer, the impact came to life at the pharmacy counter. When she heard the price of her prescriptions, she was convinced there had been a mistake. She was used to paying more than $100 at other pharmacies.
After the pharmacist explained Walmart's $4 generic program, she broke down in tears. The savings meant she would be able to buy Christmas presents for her grandchildren.
It's one of many stories that captures what affordable prescription access can mean for a family: one less tradeoff between medication and the other things that matter.
"Walmart challenged the industry to think differently about what affordable prescription access could look like," said Kevin Host, senior vice president, Pharmacy, Walmart U.S. "That same mindset continues to guide us today. The opportunity now extends beyond the price of a prescription. It's about making it easier for customers to connect the different pieces of their health and wellness journey."
The lesson was clear: when Walmart removes a barrier to care, our reach can change what access looks like for millions of people across the nation.
Twenty years later, affordability still matters. But the barriers to better health extend well beyond price. Access, distance, time and the complexity of navigating healthcare can all stand between people and the care they need. Managing health also extends beyond a prescription to the food people eat and the everyday choices they make at home.
How can we remove barriers and make it easier for people to get the care and support they need?
Today, the answer extends far beyond the price of a prescription, and our pharmacists remain central to it.
Walmart pharmacists are among the most accessible healthcare professionals, meeting customers where they are every day. Nearly 4,600 Walmart pharmacies serve communities across the country, including many areas where healthcare resources are limited. Our pharmacists provide services beyond traditional prescription dispensing, including testing and treatment in states where they're authorized to do so.
Walmart is also making it easier for customers to connect the pieces of everyday health. Same-Day Pharmacy Delivery is available in 49 states. Customers can add prescriptions to the same basket as groceries, general merchandise and other everyday essentials, with express options available in as little as 30 minutes.
Through Better Care Services, customers can connect with a curated selection of third-party virtual care providers for care and support, making it easier to find and access care in one place. Walmart's Nutrition Hub, powered by Everyday Health SignalsSM, provides opt-in personalized nutrition insights and recommendations.
Walmart doesn't need to own every part of someone's healthcare journey to help make that journey easier.
Twenty years ago, the $4 generic program showed what can happen when Walmart applies its reach to a healthcare problem and asks a simple question: How can we make this easier and more affordable for the people we serve?
The world has changed considerably since 2006.
That question hasn't.
Thank you to the thousands of Walmart pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and Health & Wellness associates who have carried that commitment forward for the past 20 years.
Twenty years later, the goal remains the same: remove barriers, make health and wellness more accessible and affordable, and help people live better, healthier lives.
