Westminster students and the Students Union's Fashion Society have organised a fashion show on Harrow Campus on 18 January titled RE(LOVE)UTION. The show aimed to showcase the work of emerging designers at the University, building their portfolio and experience.
The fashion show was led by Lou-Ann Quentin, President of the Fashion Society, and hosted by students Gabriella Viney and Sreya Roy. The organisers collaborated with students in various disciplines with light technicians, Art students for the stage design, Music students for the music, students with skills in makeup and hairstyling, students interested in modelling, and photographers.
The show's theme was a combination of punk and streetwear, and all the designers made sustainability an aspect of their work. The student designers were Zakaria Cadow, who showcased his streetwear and experimental brand called ALLTALKARCHIVED; Lou-Ann Quentin and Samuel Green, whose punk-inspired designs are made using second-hand clothing which are deconstructed and reinvented; Sara Rehman, whose knitwear brand Sarzcazms Corner reflects sustainable fashion by repurposing materials; Marie Lamblin, whose designs from her brand Lamblin Fashion combine punk fashion with a Greek mythology story of rebellion and defiance; and George Metson-Bailie, whose work, materialised by hemp and dyed with naturally sourced dyes, aims to redefine classic menswear in a sustainable way by challenging gender boundaries.
The show was sponsored by the skincare brand Malinia London, who heavily focus on sustainability in their products.
Lou-Ann Quentin said: "As an organiser and designer myself, I enjoyed having the possibility to put on such an amazing event which took a lot of hard work but allowed me to create something that felt almost impossible to do. Seeing all these talented creatives from different courses and levels come and work together was so beautiful and gave me so much inspiration and motivation for my fashion career. This event gave us all a great experience and exposure marking an important step in all our careers."
Sara Rehman added: "When I was initially approached to take part in the fashion show, I had always assumed that it was only ever fashion students that would get involved. However, meeting a range of people from different courses and backgrounds all coming together to create their own expressions on grunge was an amazing experience. It has given me so much insight and confidence in my own abilities and creations - I'm so excited for what the future holds."
The designs produced by the students directly contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. Since 2019, the University of Westminster has used the SDGs holistically to frame strategic decisions to help students and colleagues fulfil their potential and contribute to a more sustainable, equitable and healthier society.
