A new emergency response device is now part of the Geismar Volunteer Fire Department's toolkit, thanks to a $20,000 donation from Nutrien, which is proud to be part of the community through its nitrogen facility. The LUCAS cardiac compression system helps responders deliver consistent chest compressions in challenging conditions, such as during patient transport or when personnel are limited. The device is expected to improve the department's ability to respond effectively in critical situations and focus on urgent tasks while ensuring cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is administered.
The donation also covered training for the twenty-three volunteer firefighters, ensuring they are confident and capable of using the device during real-world emergencies as they serve 9,000 residents in the communities of Geismar and Dutchtown, on the East bank of the Mississippi River in Ascension Parish. This investment in both equipment and education helps strengthen the department's overall readiness.
"Ninety percent of the five hundred annual calls we receive are medical, and having the LUCAS device will greatly enhance the Fire Department's ability to help citizens and industry personnel should a CPR need arise," says Fire Chief, Nathaniel Stephens. "A huge thank you to Nutrien for investing in the health and safety of our community."
The partnership is one example of how industry and community can work together to enhance readiness and resilience.

"Choosing to support the fire department aligns with our broader goal of enhancing community safety and nourishing our communities by meeting these needs," says Ebonie Raby, Senior Advisor, Community Relations & Investment, Geismar. "We recognize the ongoing need for updated and additional equipment and by investing in these resources, we promote a safer environment for all."
"Geismar's Volunteer Fire Department is critical to protecting both our site and the surrounding community," says Richard Holder, GM, Geismar. "Their role in the community is something we deeply value, and we're committed to helping ensure they have the tools and training they need to respond safely and effectively."
Helping to build stronger communities today shapes a future where communities are connected, prepared, and supported for years to come.
