MARYSVILLE - Caltrans is alerting motorists about a winter storm on its way to the Sierra Nevada that could create challenging mountain travel conditions for the rest of the week.
The National Weather Service is forecasting six to 12 inches of snow above 5,500 feet with gusty winds up to 45 mph affecting several mountain passes over the next three days. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. Wednesday through 10 p.m. Friday. Wet snow is also forecast for the Tahoe Basin above 7,000 feet with accumulation between one to four inches on the west side and up to two inches on the east side.
Motorists should be prepared for potential chain controls, additional travel times and possible delays. Caltrans advises to make sure your vehicle has a full tank of gas or full charge, chains, and extra supplies in the event of an emergency or if traffic is held for an extended period of time. Those supplies should include extra snacks, water, a blanket, and a flashlight.
In the Sacramento Valley, the best chances for rain are forecast north of I-80 with precipitation amounts between 0.25 - 0.5 of an inch, with upwards to an inch of rain possible in the foothills.
