WVU will honor those who have served and continue to serve our country during a Veterans Appreciation Breakfast Tuesday (Nov. 11) at the Diversified Energy Terrace in Milan Puskar Stadium. (WVU Photo/Jennifer Shephard) Download full-size WHAT: West Virginia University Veterans Appreciation Breakfast WHO: WVU Center for Veteran, Military and Family Programs, WVU Office of Compliance and Prevention Education, members of the University and Morgantown communities WHEN: Tuesday, Nov. 11, 8:30-10:30 a.m.Doors open at 8:30 a.m. and the program will begin at 9 a.m. WHERE: Diversified Energy Terrace, Milan Puskar Stadium, 1 Ira Errett Rodgers Drive, Morgantown NOTES: The Veterans Appreciation Breakfast will feature a keynote address from retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. George Mayo. Mayo was commissioned through the ROTC program at Florida State University in 1980 as a second lieutenant and assigned to the Armor Branch. He excelled in ROTC and received the Distinguished Military Graduate award. After graduation, he was selected to attend the Army Parachutist training course at Fort Benning, Georgia. After completing Airborne school, he was sent to Basic Officer Leadership Course at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and assigned as a tank platoon leader, 40th Armor Berlin Brigade, Berlin, Germany. Mayo went on to take company command in Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. While stationed at Fort Hood, he was honored with a second command of a M1 Abrams Company, D Co., 1/5 Calvary, 1st Cavalry Division. After his troop time, he was assigned as an instructor in the WVU Military Science Department. From this position, he transferred to the West Virginia National Guard from active duty. In this capacity, he served in many positions of responsibility and ended his career as the commander of the Regional Training Institute at Camp Dawson, Kingwood.
