On 23 February, Consul General Chen Shijie attended the 2026 Chinese New Year celebration hosted by the Teo Swa General Association (TSGA) of New Zealand and delivered a speech. Over 200 guests participated in the event, including Members of Parliament Nancy Lu, and other representatives from TSGA and the local Chinese community. MP Carlos Cheung delivered remarks via video.
In his speech, Consul General Chen extended New Year greetings to members of the Chinese community in the consular district and introduced China's development achievements over the past year as well as the latest progress in China-New Zealand relations. Chen noted that the Chinese community is an important part of New Zealand's multicultural family, and Chinese New Year celebrations have expanded from the Chinese community to the broader society. Overseas Chinese are guardians of hometown ties, envoys of Chinese culture, and active contributors to China-New Zealand friendship. He called on the overseas Chinese to keep pooling their strengths to promote exchanges and cooperation in various fields between China and New Zealand.
The event was filled with a strong festive atmosphere, with members of the Chinese community presenting wonderful performances, including songs and instrumental music.
