Preparing future healthcare professionals and creating opportunities for them to serve close to home were key themes shared by Dr. Jeff Mercer, dean of Campbell University's College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences, during the Dunn Area Chamber of Commerce's State of Healthcare luncheon on Oct. 8.
Centered on Healthy People. Healthy Business. Healthy Community. the event brought together healthcare, education and community leaders to discuss the connections between healthcare access, a strong workforce and the region's future.
The panel included representatives from Cape Fear Valley Harnett Healthcare, CommWell Health, Campbell University, Central Carolina Community College and the Harnett County Health Department. The discussion focused on opportunities and challenges facing healthcare, particularly in rural communities throughout Harnett County. Topics included access to care, preventive health, workforce development, community health and mental health.
Mercer highlighted Campbell's commitment to preparing future healthcare professionals, strengthening the local healthcare workforce pipeline and expanding access to care in rural communities. He emphasized the importance of collaboration among educators, healthcare providers and community partners to address regional needs.
His remarks also underscored the value of creating opportunities for graduates to build their careers and lives in the region. Connecting education with local employment opportunities can help communities retain talent while supporting the healthcare services residents need.
Mercer brings experience in pharmacy practice, pharmacy management, healthcare education and university administration to these conversations. He became dean of Campbell's College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences in January 2023 after joining the University as associate dean of administration in June 2022. Previously, he served for five years as dean of Harding University's College of Pharmacy. He earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Auburn University and a Master of Business Administration from Harding University.
The Dunn Area Chamber of Commerce is a nonprofit membership organization that brings businesses and professionals together to support a healthy economy and community. The luncheon provided a forum for that collaboration, connecting leaders across sectors around a shared priority: a healthier future for Harnett County and the surrounding communities.
