The IHSA conducts its annual legislative process in November and December.
All-school voting during that process determines new by-laws, or changes to existing by-laws. Some of those changes have a a special carve-out to take effect within 30 days, but the majority do not become applicable until July 1 for the following school year.
In December of 2025, IHSA member schools voted to pass 12 proposals. Three have already active, meaning nine others will go into effect on July 1, 2026.
The most pressing change is a "no contact week" from June 29 through July 5, where schools may not practice, compete, hold open gyms, provide conditioning or weight training during this week.
