This spring, Historic Alexandria invites visitors to explore the fascinating world of early medicine through a series of specialty tours at the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum, 105-107 S. Fairfax Street. These engaging programs explore the history of medicine, botanical remedies, and even a touch of magic-from herbal medicines featured in popular culture to the more mysterious substances once found on apothecary shelves-offering visitors new ways to experience one of Alexandria's most remarkable historic sites.
Tickets are available now at alexandriava.gov/Shop. Tours are $15 per person and $12 for Office of Historic Alexandria (OHA) Members. Advance purchase is recommended. Proceeds support Historic Alexandria's museums.
Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum
Outlandish Apothecary - March 29 and April 12, 11 a.m.-noon
Tour this historic apothecary and learn about herbal medicines featured in Outlander, from cascara to dauco seeds. Discover the role of women and apothecaries in 18th-century medicine. Recommended for ages 18 and up.
Poisons at the Apothecary Museum - April 4, 11, 18, 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Explore the sinister side of medicine on the Apothecary Museum's Poisons Tour. This one-hour tour explores several different types of poisons, their historic uses at the Apothecary, and what we know today. Recommended for adults.
A Magical Apothecary - April 26, 11 a.m.-noon
Learn about the muggle botanical science that inspired the potions and herbology of Harry Potter's wizarding world on a tour of this 19th-century apothecary, and make your own magical potion! Recommended for ages 8 and up. Children must be accompanied by a ticket-holding adult.
