Installation has begun!
As the City of Royal Oak nears the launch of its new parking system, visitors will see increased activity downtown as new parking meters and signage are installed. Work will continue through December in preparation for the new system-featuring the ParkMobile app and Flowbird meters-to go live on January 1.
The names ParkMobile and Flowbird may sound familiar, and that's with good reason. ParkMobile is widely used throughout our area, including in Detroit and Birmingham. The same app is used for all-so if you've used ParkMobile to park for a game in Detroit, you're already set. Similarly, Flowbird meters are used in Detroit and Ferndale, and are highly rated for their ease of use. The meters were overwhelmingly favored by users during a series of technology-testing open houses held by the City in May.
ParkMobile is a web and mobile app that allows users to easily find and pay for parking. The service allows you to start a parking session from your phone, keep track of time, and add more time (within the maximum time limit) as needed, without making an extra trip back to the meter. Simply select or enter the zone number on the sign or pay station, follow the prompts, and you're good to go. Enjoy your time downtown without worrying about the meter.
ParkMobile offers several convenient ways to pay:
ParkMobile service begins in Royal Oak on January 2.
Flowbird pay stations provide another easy way to pay for parking in Downtown Royal Oak. Pay stations are available for on-street spaces and surface parking lots, offering a simple option for visitors who prefer to pay at a kiosk rather than by phone.
To use a pay station, press start, follow the prompts, and complete payment with a card or coins. Once your session is confirmed, you're all set - there's no need to return to your vehicle.
Flowbird stations also let you add more time remotely by following the instructions on the pay station receipt or screen, making it easy to extend your stay (within the maximum time limit) if plans change while you're downtown.
Flowbird meters will be installed throughout the month of December, taking the place of the existing MPS system on January 2. Installation work should be quick; however, you may experience some temporary, minor noise or parking disruptions.
The installation schedule is as follows, and may be subject to change:
Royal Oak is upgrading to Flowbird pay stations and a new mobile app from ParkMobile to improve and enhance the parking experience for users. The new system provides more convenient payment options and uses new pay-by-plate technology, making it easier to park, pay, and stay downtown.
The parking rates and time limits will stay the same for now. This upgrade focuses on improving convenience and technology.
The cost of parking remains the same.
In municipal parking structures:
Surface lot parking (4-hour maximum limit)
On-street parking (3-hour maximum limit)
You can pay:
Instead of entering a space number, you'll enter your license plate number at the pay station or on the app. There's no need to return to your car or display a receipt-just pay and go!
You can extend your session remotely using the ParkMobile mobile app, text-to-pay, or a web browser-no need to return to the pay station. (Note that sessions cannot be digitally extended if you pay at a meter and choose a printed/paper receipt.) Just remember, extensions are only allowed within posted time limits.
Yes! The Flowbird pay stations reduce paper waste since you don't need a printed receipt. Plus, the pay stations are solar-powered, helping Royal Oak meet its sustainability goals.
The City's enforcement team will continue to monitor parking, but now they'll act more as parking ambassadors-assisting users, answering questions, and verifying payment by scanning license plates.
Yes, the new system uses secure payment processing and encryption to protect your data, whether you pay at a Flowbird pay station, through the ParkMobile app, or by phone.
Just like today, parking must be paid during enforcement hours. If you don't pay, you may receive a ticket.
Instructions will be posted on all pay stations, and a phone number will be available for customer support. The City's website will also include helpful tips and a guide to using the new system.
The City plans to launch the new Flowbird pay stations and ParkMobile mobile app on January 1. Stay tuned for updates!
