Donald Trump spent months on the campaign trail declaring himself "the candidate of peace" who would get rid of "warmongerers." Then he got into office and branded himself the "president of peace." But today he made clear that he never meant a word of it. Trump's "Department of War" proves once again that his promises are nothing but empty words and he's more than happy to waste taxpayer dollars on vanity projects.
Despite all his boasting, Trump doesn't actually have the legal authority to change the name without Congress, so the Department of War name won't be official but will be a "secondary title" - whatever that means.
In response, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
"Donald Trump looked voters in the eye and promised to be a peacemaker only to turn around and name his own 'Department of War.' Like the con man he is, he duped his supporters into believing he would be an anti-war, pro-peace president, but once he got into office he abandoned those promises completely. Today's announcement feels like a middle finger to his own voters and all the brave service members who are now being treated as the president's personal vanity project."
Trump repeatedly claimed he was the "candidate of peace" who would "restore peace in the world." He vowed that when he got into office he would "expel the warmongers, the profiteers," and even declared in his inaugural address that he would be a "peacemaker." And of course, he's taken to Truth Social to declare himself the "president of peace." But simultaneously he has bragged about being a "war hero" for approving airstrikes on Iran and is now needlessly renaming the Pentagon the "Department of War."
The "Department of War" might be fitting for Trump, considering that wars around the world continue to rage with no end in sight, despite his promises that he would end the war in Ukraine on "day one" and quickly end the crisis in Gaza. Even though Trump spends most days begging for the Nobel Peace Prize and complaining that he hasn't gotten it yet, it's pretty clear that Trump is anything but a pro-peace president.
