On 27 August 2026, H.E. Mr. Vijavat Isarabhakdi, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, presided over a Reception marking the launch of the candidature of Dr. Vilawan Mangklatanakul for re-election to the International Law Commission (ILC) for the term 2028-2032, at Vithes Samosorn.
In his opening remarks, the Vice Minister highlighted the ILC's vital role in the codification and progressive development of international law and expressed his support for Dr. Vilawan under the campaign slogan "Continuity, Practicality, Inclusivity". The slogan reflects her background of extensive practical experience, comprehensive continuity as a sitting ILC member, and dedicated advocacy for inclusive perspectives in the progressive development of international law.
Throughout her current term, Dr. Vilawan has actively contributed to the work of the ILC on a range of important legal issues. Most recently, at its 77th Session, the ILC endorsed her proposal to include "The Right to Regulate in International Investment Law" in its long-term programme of work to promote a balance between investment protection and States' right to regulate in the public interest, for instance, environmental protection, public health, and sustainable development. The elections for the 2028-2032 term will be held in 2027 during UNGA82, with seven seats to be allocated to the Asia-Pacific Group (APG).
