DATE: October 19, 2026

CASE: Jose Borrego (Case #22FE006184)

PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Emilee Divinagracia, Major Crimes Unit

Jose Borrego was convicted by a jury today of four counts of attempted murder with premeditation on a peace officer, three counts of attempted murder, three counts of assault with a firearm, three counts of shooting at an occupied vehicle, four counts of assault with a firearm on a peace officer, one count of reckless evading of a police officer and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The jury also found true allegations related to the use and discharge of a firearm and causing great bodily injury.

On April 14, 2026, Sacramento police officers responded to multiple calls reporting a man in a silver Nissan shooting into occupied vehicles as they drove down 65th Street in south Sacramento. One of the victims was an off-duty probation officer who was struck in his right shoulder and transported to the hospital. Law enforcement collected 18 shell casings from the scene. Later that same day, officers were in a marked patrol car stopped at a red light at Stockton and 14th Avenue when a silver Nissan driven by Jose Borrego ran a red light in front of them. Officers turned on their overhead lights and attempted to do a traffic stop. Borrego initially pulled over, but when the officer told him to pull his vehicle out of the flow of traffic, Borrego took off at a high rate of speed. He drove more than 50 mph in a residential neighborhood running several stop signs. When officers located Borrego, he was standing outside of his vehicle in a shooting stance holding a handgun with an extended magazine. Upon seeing the patrol vehicle, Borrego shot his firearm 16 times, striking the patrol car several times. One of the officers returned fire, but Borrego was able to get back into his vehicle and flee. A multi-agency manhunt ensued for hours. Borrego abandoned his vehicle, changed his appearance and tried to flee on foot. When law enforcement located Borrego and ordered him to stop, he lied about his name and refused to follow orders before a K9 officer safely detained him. Officers located a handgun loaded with an extended magazine as well as an additional empty extended magazine in a satchel Borrego was wearing. Forensic testing revealed the shell casings located at the earlier shooting were a match with Borrego's firearm.

Borrego faces a maximum sentence of 192 years and 4 months to life in prison. Sentencing is set for November 6, 2026, at 1:30 PM in Department 11C before the Honorable Deborah Lobre.
