U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Approves Section 404 Permits for Exploration

NANA Regional Corporation (NANA) is pleased to announce that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has approved the Section 404 permit, which is essential for constructing an access road to the Aktigiruq and Anarraaq deposits. These deposits, located on state of Alaska lands, represent a significant step in ensuring the long-term viability of Red Dog Mine operations.

This milestone follows months of meaningful engagement with the communities of Kivalina, Noatak, and other regional stakeholders. During this time, NANA and Teck worked closely with community leaders to understand their concerns and collaborate on solutions to address potential impacts while ensuring the project aligns with the region's values and priorities.

The permit approval allows Teck to move forward with exploration efforts to determine the feasibility of developing the Aktigiruq deposit as an underground ore source. With the current Aqqaluk deposit projected to be depleted within the next eight years, these efforts are critical to addressing potential production gaps and sustaining the Red Dog Mine's contributions to the region's economy.

"The approval of these permits marks a pivotal moment for the Red Dog Mine," said Lance Miller, NANA vice president of natural resources. "We are grateful for the valuable input and collaboration of the Kivalina and Noatak communities, and we remain committed to maintaining an open and respectful dialogue as we advance this project."

Construction of the access road, a key component of the exploration phase, started in December 2024. The road will enable the transportation of equipment and materials needed for extensive exploration, engineering, and environmental studies.

A transition of Red Dog operations from an open-pit to an underground mining model signifies a new chapter in its operational history. If production occurs, this shift will change how the mine operates, underscoring the importance of proactive planning and engagement with local communities and stakeholders.

"NANA remains steadfast in its commitment to our people, our land and our subsistence way of life," said John Lincoln, NANA president and CEO. "We will continue to work alongside Teck to address concerns, identify solutions, and ensure long-term benefits for Northwest Alaska."

Red Dog Mine, operated by Teck and owned by NANA Regional Corporation, is one of the world's largest zinc mines. Red Dog also produces lead and silver and is the only domestic source of germanium. Envisioned by early leaders as an economic opportunity for 35 years, it has been a cornerstone of economic development in Northwest Alaska, providing jobs, revenues, and opportunities for local communities while prioritizing the protection of subsistence resources and community engagement.
