The National Association of Counties (NACo) has recognized Albany County as a national leader in Veteran services, awarding the Albany County Veteran Peer-to-Peer Support Program with a 2026 Achievement Award. The NACo Achievement Awards recognize county government programs that demonstrate innovation and serve as models for counties across the nation.
This year's recognition highlights Albany County's ongoing commitment to developing programs that address the evolving needs of its Veteran community. It was one of just three programs in New York State to receive a 2026 NACo Achievement Award and the only Human Services program from New York recognized this year.
The Veteran Peer-to-Peer Support Program is a non-clinical mental health initiative that connects Veterans with fellow Veterans from similar eras of military service, creating meaningful relationships built on shared experiences, trust, and camaraderie. The program is designed to reduce isolation, ease the transition to civilian life, and foster a strong sense of belonging through peer-led social activities, one-on-one support, advocacy, and referrals to resources including housing assistance, VA benefits, and employment opportunities.
"Mental health support doesn't always begin in a doctor's office. Sometimes it starts with a conversation between two people who understand each other," said Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy. "Our Veteran Peer-to-Peer Support Program gives Veterans a place where they can connect without judgment, ask for help without stigma, and know they don't have to face life's challenges alone. I am incredibly proud that this innovative program has been recognized nationally, and I commend our Veterans Service Bureau for the outstanding work they do every day on behalf of those who have served our country."
