Grimm Krupa: Our Commonwealth Cannot Prosper on Missed Deadlines and Closed Doors

HARRISBURG - Rep. Charity Grimm Krupa (R-Fayette) issued the following statement after the General Assembly's failure to pass the state budget today:

"The deadline for adopting Pennsylvania's state budget is today, and once again, the Commonwealth finds itself without one.

"Benjamin Franklin wisely observed that, 'By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.' Those words ring as true today as they did nearly three centuries ago.

"Our founders understood that liberty and self-government depend upon discipline as much as debate. They established a deadline not as a suggestion, but as a duty. A government that cannot faithfully order its own affairs or fulfill its obligations on time will find it difficult to earn the confidence of those it serves.

"Our citizens do not enjoy the privilege of postponing their obligations. Farmers cannot delay the harvest. Business owners cannot indefinitely postpone payroll. Families cannot simply choose to ignore their household budgets. Government should hold itself to no lesser standard than the people it serves.

"The greater concern is not merely that the deadline has passed, but that the process has become predictable. Important decisions involving billions of taxpayer dollars are too often reserved for private negotiations, while legislators and the public alike are asked to consider complex legislation with little time for careful examination. Such haste is no companion to wisdom.

"The Commonwealth prospers not through extravagant promises, but through prudent stewardship. Lasting prosperity cannot be built upon spending beyond our recurring revenues, nor by depending upon temporary revenues to satisfy permanent obligations. Franklin also reminded us to 'Beware of little expenses. A small leak will sink a great ship.' So too may repeated fiscal imprudence threaten the long-term stability of our Commonwealth.

"As a state representative, I will not measure success by whether a budget is completed quickly after the deadline has passed. I will measure success by whether it is responsible, transparent, sustainable and worthy of the trust placed in us by the people of Pennsylvania.

"The principles that guided our Commonwealth's founders remain as relevant today as ever: honesty in public service, careful stewardship of the public treasury and respect for the citizens whose labor provides every dollar entrusted to government.

"Pennsylvania deserves a budget built through foresight rather than urgency, deliberation rather than haste, and transparency rather than secrecy.

"Our founders expected no less. Neither should we."
