City of Greensboro Reaches Halfway Mark in Road to 10,000 Housing Initiative Ahead of Schedule

The City of Greensboro has reached a major milestone in its Road to 10,000 housing initiative, surpassing the halfway mark toward its goal of supporting the development of 10,000 new housing units by 2030 - well ahead of schedule.

City Manager Trey Davis announced the initiative in February of last year to address Greensboro's growing need for housing by bringing together public and private partners, encouraging development across a range of price points and housing types, and identifying opportunities to make the development process more efficient.

Building more than 5,000 new housing units in 18 months illustrates significant progress in the City's efforts to expand housing capacity, support economic growth, and strengthen Greensboro's long-term vitality.

"Reaching this milestone ahead of schedule is an encouraging sign that Greensboro is moving in the right direction," said City Manager Trey Davis. "Housing is fundamental to the success of our community. It affects our ability to attract and retain talent, support our workforce, grow our economy, and ensure that people at different stages of life have opportunities to call Greensboro home. We're proud of the progress made so far, and we remain focused on building on that momentum."

Companies like Boom Supersonic, Toyota, and JetZero are moving here and expanding here. With potential investments totaling $11 billion dollars, housing will be essential to supporting that growth and ensuring the people who power it have a place to live.

The Road to 10,000 initiative reflects the City's commitment to creating a more inclusive, accessible, and sustainable community. By working collaboratively with developers, property owners, community stakeholders, and other partners, Greensboro aims to encourage a broader range of housing opportunities while responding to the needs of a growing population.

Since the Road to 10,000 initiative focuses on offering homes at all price points it opens doors that previously were closed to some potential buyers. "I never thought in a million years that I would own a home," says new homeowner Von Patrick, "But today I am finally a homeowner."

"Inventory is a real problem, and we need homes of all types and prices," says realtor Hillary Meredith of Yost and Little, "So quite honestly this couldn't have come at a better time."

Increasing the housing supply is also an important component of the City's long-term strategy for growth and development. A diverse housing market can provide more options for residents, help employers attract employees, and contribute to the stability and continued growth of neighborhoods throughout Greensboro.
