July 28, 2026 - Beginning Wednesday, July 29, 2026, work moves eastward on Central Avenue as crews continue the second part of the Central Avenue Resurfacing Project by replacing sanitary sewer lines from 14th Street to 23rd Street.
Beginning Wednesday, July 29, crews will begin replacing the sewer in the 1800 block of Central Avenue. To complete their work safely, 18th Street to 19th Street will be closed to through traffic, including the intersection of 19th Street and Central Avenue. A detour will be in place using 18th Street to the west, Mississippi Boulevard to the south, and 21st Street to the east (see map below). Work on this section is expected to take approximately six weeks, weather permitting, and then crews will move east of 19th Street. The city will release a start date as crews wrap up the second section from 18th Street to 19th Street.
Meanwhile, the first part of the Central Avenue Resurfacing Project continues as Iowa American Water replaces the water main in some spots from 14th Street to Pius Lane. For more information, see our earlier media releases below.
June 5, 2026 - Beginning Monday, June 8, 2026, work moves eastward on Central Avenue as Iowa American Water continues the first part of the Central Avenue Resurfacing Project by replacing the water main in some spots from 14th Street to Pius Lane.
Beginning Monday, June 8, crews will begin work on the fourth of five sections from 31st Street to Pius Lane (in front of Neil Armstrong Elementary School). That section of Central Avenue will be closed to through traffic. A detour will be in place using 28th Street on the west, State Street to the south, and Devils Glen Road to the east (see map below). Work on this section is expected to take four weeks, weather permitting, and then crews will move west.

May 18, 2026 - Beginning Wednesday, May 20, 2026, the second part of the Central Avenue Resurfacing Project begins as crews replace sanitary sewer lines from 14th Street to 23rd Street.
Beginning Wednesday, May 20, 2026, crews will begin replacing the sewer from 14th Street to 18th Street. To complete their work safely, 15th Street to 17th Street will be closed to through traffic with the rest of the section open to local traffic only. A detour will be in place using 14th Street to the west, Mississippi Boulevard to the south, and 18th Street to the east (see map below). Work on this section is expected to take five to six weeks, weather permitting, and then crews will move east of 18th Street. The city will release a start date as crews wrap up the first section from 14th Street to 18th Street.
Meanwhile, Iowa American Water continues the first part of the Central Avenue Resurfacing Project by replacing the water main in some spots along this stretch of roadway. Currently, they are on the third of five sections from 19th Street to 23rd Street. Beginning Tuesday, May 26, 2026, that section will expand eastward, closing the intersection of Central Avenue and 23rd Street. A detour for 23rd Street will be in place using 18th Street to the west, State and Grant Streets to the south, and Lincoln Road to the north. A detour for Central Avenue will be in place using 21st Street to the west, State and Grant Streets to the south, and 27th Street to the west (see map below for both detours). Work in this intersection is expected to take two weeks, weather permitting, and then crews will move east to the fourth and final section from 25th Street to Pius Lane. The city will release a start date as crews wrap up the third section.

As Iowa American Water moves west to east down Central Avenue, crews will start the second part of this project - replacing sanitary sewer lines in two areas, which will also cause closures and detours. The city will release a start date for that part of the project at a later date.
