The City of Bismarck Planning Division will begin placing signs on properties and boulevards before a public hearing for a development project is held, starting this September. The signs will be placed about two weeks before the meeting and will be removed shortly after. They will include basic information, such as when and where the meeting will be held, the type of project being proposed, and links and contact information to learn more.
Planning Manager Daniel Nairn notes, "Public participation is integral to the planning and development process, and the City of Bismarck recognizes that not everyone uses the same channels of information. Signs will be one more way to learn how to be involved."
City of Bismarck public hearings are already advertised in the newspaper, sent by postcard to nearby property owners, and shown on the City website. Now, placing a physical sign at the location where the change may occur will reach those who drive or walk by on a regular basis. These are the individuals who may be especially interested in what is being discussed for that site.
This is currently a pilot project directed by the Board of City Commissioners. Data will be collected at meetings throughout the following year to determine how effective the signs are as a communication tool.
