Applications Open for Marion S. Barry Jr. Summer Youth Employment Program

February 11, 2026 12:16 PM

The Marion S. Barry Jr. Summer Youth Employment Program (MBSYEP) is now accepting applications for its 2026 summer work experiences.

The program is open to District youth ages 14- to 24-years-old and places them with an employer for six weeks. Applications must be completed online at summerjobs.dc.gov. The application period closes on March 6, 2026. The DC Housing Authority (DCHA) is proud to participate as a program host site and continue its partnership with MBSYEP.

Any MBSYEP participants who intern with DCHA will develop professional skills and explore the career pathways available with the agency's different departments. At DCHA, MBSYEP participants will also engage in "Future Fridays," a series of development activities designed to prepare them for academic and professional success.

Highlights from the summer 2025 internships include a Q&A session with retired Washington Commanders defensive back and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Darrell Green, a first aid/CPR certification course, and a tour of the University of Maryland campus where interns gained insight about higher education and other post-graduation opportunities.

MBSYEP, administered by DOES, has operated for nearly 50 years and remains one of the nation's longest-running youth employment initiatives. The program provides District youth ages 14 to 24 with meaningful work experiences across the public and private sectors, with a focus on leadership development, workforce readiness, and civic engagement.

Youth who are interested in listing DCHA as their preferred host site can do so after they have completed their certification and verification through the D.C. Department of Employment Services (DOES). For more information on eligibility, how to apply, certification, orientation and more, visit DOES website or summerjobs.dc.gov.
