IRENA Assembly 2026 Concludes with Strategy, Program and Budget

Today, the 16th session of the IRENA Assembly has concluded, following three eventful Assembly days.

The record participation of over 1500 ministers, government officials, CEOs and partners from across the world confirmed IRENA is at the center of the global energy discourse.

"The energy transition is unstoppable, and nothing can reverse it", said Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA at the opening. "It is time for countries to reinforce their renewable energy strategies, not only for climate action, but because renewables are the most resilient and no-regret economic pathway for development, security, decarbonisation, and competitiveness."

He continued: "The competitiveness of tomorrow's economies will be largely determined by their ability to move electrons and molecules at the lowest possible cost, and to deliver clean, safe, and affordable energy services. Fast movers will gain lasting productivity and competitiveness advantages over those who hesitate." Read his full opening speech.

The high-level dialogue "Reimagining Energy Futures: Bold Visions for Shared Prosperity" provided Members a platform for articulating positive visions for the energy future. Decision-makers and leaders reflected on the challenges of the traditional approaches to energy transition and gave insights how renewables can fully realise their potential as catalyst for truly inclusive development, structural transformation, and long-term resilience in both developing and developed countries.

During the session, La Camera re-iterated that in a world shaped by geopolitical tensions, supply-chain disruptions, and growing climate risks, energy has re-emerged as a defining factor of national security and global stability.

The session set the stage for the other discussion at Assembly, with a view of building a shared agenda and priorities for a better energy future around which the international community can rally in the years to come. In addition to almost 20 side events, the Assembly gathered several ministerials on geothermal energy, green industrialisation, artificial intelligence and digitalisation, renewable energy for agri-food systems as well as sustainable aviation fuels. The IRENA Membership overwhelmingly supported the Agency's mandate. Members also adopted IRENA's Medium-term Strategy 2023-2027 evaluation and Work Programme and Budget for 2026-2027. Find official documents on irena.org.

"Even when multilateralism is under strain", La Camera concluded, "IRENA continues to grow, now reaching 171 Members, a testament to the relevance of our mandate and the shared conviction that cooperation on renewables has tangible value. It reinforces IRENA's unique role in guiding the global energy transition toward a more secure, inclusive, and sustainable future."
