WASHINGTON - Today, Committee Republicans voted to limit pregnant students' access to information on all resources available to them as they pursue their education. "Women should be able to control these decisions. By shielding students from health care information, resources, and rights that are available to them, Republicans are denying them the choice to decide what is best for them and their families." said Ranking Member Scott. The Pregnant Students' Rights Act (H.R. 6359) directs colleges and universities to share only limited information about students' existing rights under Title IX and selectively highlights resources that encourage carrying a pregnancy to term. Here are some of the amendments Committee Republicans voted NO on that would actuallyhelp student parents succeed:
The Committee also advanced the Enhancing Detection of Human Trafficking Act (H.R. 4307), a bipartisan bill that allows the Department of Labor (DOL) to continue training its staff to identify and report human trafficking. Inspectors in the Wage and Hour Division, for example, are already trained to recognize common indicators of trafficking, such as confiscated identification, withheld documents or wages, limits on workers' movement or communication, and threats or intimidation. No one should be forced to work through abuse, coercion, or fear. Read Ranking Member Scott's opening statement here.
