Daniel Records-Galbraith

I'm deeply saddened to share that Daniel Records-Galbraith, director of Western's Office of Civil Rights and Title IX Compliance, passed away on April 28 after nearly 25 years living with Crohn's disease and related conditions.

Daniel will be remembered as a remarkable colleague, leader, and friend whose presence left a lasting imprint on the Western community. A consummate professional, Dan brought deep expertise and an unwavering sense of purpose to his work, pairing intellectual rigor with a genuine commitment to the people around him.

Those who knew Dan will recall his thoughtful nature and his steady willingness to help others. He had a distinctive sense of humor - often dry and unexpected - that could catch you off guard, before giving way to something even more memorable: his sincere care for others. Dan made people feel seen. He ensured colleagues felt welcomed, comfortable, and supported, whether they were new to the university or long-established members of the community.

Dan came to Western at a pivotal time, stepping into leadership of the Civil Rights and Title IX Compliance office following a period of significant transition. He met that moment with characteristic compassion and integrity. Under his leadership, the office not only stabilized but grew in its ability to serve the university with fairness, clarity, and humanity. His approach was rooted in both principle and empathy, qualities that earned him the trust and respect of colleagues across campus and the students who came to him for help.

His dedication to civil rights was not abstract; it was lived daily through his work, his relationships, and the passion for equality and justice he brought to both. Dan believed deeply in fostering a community grounded in dignity, understanding, and accountability. He remained a steady voice for fairness and compassion, encouraging others to engage thoughtfully and act with care. He inspired those around him to strive toward a more equitable and empathetic campus, and his influence will continue to shape that work for years to come.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dan will be remembered for who he was: a person of integrity, kindness, and quiet strength. He was a mentor to many, a steady hand in difficult moments, and a friend whose presence brought reassurance and warmth. His impact extended far beyond his role, touching the lives of colleagues and community members in ways both large and small.

Dan's passing is a profound loss felt most acutely by those of us fortunate enough to work alongside him every day. His legacy endures in the culture he helped build, in the people he supported, and in the commitment to compassion and justice he championed every day throughout his time at Western.
