Prestigious recognition salutes career of transformational leadership.

Today, it was announced that the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) President and Chief Executive Officer, Steven C. Anderson, FASAE, CAE, IOM, has been awarded the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) Key Award - the highest individual honor presented by ASAE and the most distinguished recognition in the association profession.

Anderson is only the 81st recipient of this award, which was established in 1960.

The ASAE Key Award recognizes a Chief Executive Officer of an association or professional society "who has demonstrated exceptional leadership not only within their own association, but also through significant contributions to society, their industry or profession, and the broader association community. Key Award recipients exemplify the very best of association leadership -combining strategic vision, advocacy, excellence, and a lasting commitment to advancing the public good."

Anderson's selection reflects his strong record of leadership at NACDS, his profound influence on the pharmacy industry and American healthcare, and his decades of service to the association community itself - including as Chairman of the ASAE Board of Directors.

"Steve's leadership has left a lasting mark not only on the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, but on the entire association community," said ASAE President and CEO Michelle Mason, FASAE, CAE, AAiP. "Through decades of service, he has exemplified what values-driven, mission-focused leadership looks like - strengthening organizations, elevating the voice of associations and always leading with integrity, vision and purpose."

"I'm especially grateful for the role Steve played in my own journey. As co-chair of the search committee that brought me to ASAE and as my first Board Chair, he provided steady guidance, trusted counsel and partnership during a pivotal time for our organization. It is a privilege to recognize Steve with ASAE's 2026 Key Award and to celebrate his extraordinary career, enduring contributions and deep commitment to the power and purpose of associations," Mason continued.

"I am deeply honored to receive the prestigious ASAE Key Award. Throughout my career, I have believed in the unique power of associations to bring people together around a common purpose and to create meaningful, lasting impact. This recognition is especially meaningful because it comes from a profession that I have been privileged to serve for more than four decades," said NACDS President and CEO Steven C. Anderson.

"ASAE sets the standard for excellence in the association profession, and it's an incredible honor to be recognized by my peers in this community with the prestigious Key Award," Anderson continued. "I have long believed that effective leadership is grounded in stewardship, service, and inclusion - understanding the moment facing an organization, bringing together a broad range of voices to inform its direction, and guiding it forward with discipline and purpose. NACDS exists because retailers and suppliers - who are often competitors - choose to come together in service of the greater mission to advance care for the American people. This recognition reflects the dedication of the entire NACDS Board, membership, and team, and I share it with them."

National Journal has described Anderson as having a "reputation as Mr. Fix-It," while Association Bisnow has called him the "turn around man," citing his reputation for "building brand, clout, and revenue" at the three national trade associations he has led.

Anderson has been the CEO of NACDS since 2007. He was CEO of the National Restaurant Association from 1999 to 2007, and CEO of the American Frozen Food Institute from 1989 to 1999.

Anderson's path to the Key Award reflects his sustained engagement with ASAE over many years. He served as Chairman of the ASAE Board of Directors from 2021-2022 and as Chairman of the ASAE Research Foundation from 2020-2021. In 2020, ASAE named Anderson a Fellow (FASAE), an honor awarded for exceptional contributions to the profession. He also holds the CAE (Certified Association Executive) designation from ASAE and the IOM designation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Institute for Organization Management. Last October, Anderson received the Executive Certificate in Non-Profit Leadership from the Harvard University Kennedy School Executive Education Program.

A Long History of Recognition

The ASAE Key Award joins an extraordinary list of honors Anderson has received throughout his career, including:

  • The NACDS Sheldon W. Fantle Lifetime Achievement Award
  • "Trade Association CEO of the Year" by CEO Update magazine
  • "Association Executive of the Year" by Association Trends magazine
  • One of the "50 Most Influential People" in retail by Mass Market Retailers magazine for 19 consecutive years
  • One of the "Power 30" in America by Fortune Small Business magazine

  • The Alzheimer's Association's Award for leadership to fight the disease throughout the Washington, D.C., region and nationally

A Capstone to Two Decades at NACDS

The Key Award arrives as Anderson prepares to retire as President and CEO of NACDS at the end of the calendar year, concluding 20 years of service marked by transformational leadership for the association and the pharmacy industry.

Under Anderson's leadership, NACDS strengthened its institutional infrastructure and long-term viability, stabilizing and rebuilding the association's financial footing and positioning NACDS for enduring strength.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Anderson helped position retail pharmacy as a cornerstone of the national pandemic response, working directly with the White House and federal agencies to enable NACDS members to rapidly scale testing and vaccination nationwide. He has also led the charge for expanded scope of practice for pharmacies across the country, opening the door for pharmacists to operate at the top of their education.

Most recently, Anderson played a leading role in enacting landmark pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) reform into law earlier this year - a historic achievement that brings long-overdue transparency and accountability to the PBM market.
