Missouri Students Are Counting on You: Vote NO on August 4

Missouri voters will decide two constitutional amendments on August 4 that could have significant impacts on public schools, working families, and the citizen initiative process. Learn what's at stake and share this information with others before Election Day.

Amendment 4

Amendment 4 would:

• Change the way constitutional amendments are approved in Missouri.
• Require a majority vote in each of Missouri's eight congressional districts. That means one of the eight districts could overrule the popular vote of the other seven districts.
• Allow a smaller geographic area of the state to block measures supported by a statewide majority of voters.
• Reduce the ability of Missouri citizens to overturn laws passed by the legislature through the initiative process.
• Affect future efforts to challenge policies impacting unions and working families, including issues such as right-to-work legislation and paycheck deception proposals.

Amendment 5

Amendment 5 would:

• Give the Missouri legislature a five-year window to restructure the state's sales tax system without having a public vote.
• Remove voter-approved protections currently in place regarding tax changes.
• Create the possibility of expanding sales taxes to additional goods and services.
• Potentially affect costs for working families, including expenses related to healthcare, medication, legal services, and other everyday needs.
• Severely impact public services and local communities, including public education.
