On June 25, SLO County Clerk-Recorder Elaina Cano certified the results of the June 2, 2026, Statewide Direct Primary Election. More than 55% of voters turned out in this primary, up from just under 49% in the primary four years ago. Statewide turnout for this election stands at 40.9% as of SLO County's certification.

The SLO County Clerk-Recorder has certified the June 2, 2026, Statewide Direct Primary Election, the final step in wrapping up the official election canvass. While the bulk of the vote tabulation-including processing more than 90,000 mail ballots-was completed by California's new 13-day deadline of June 15, by law voters had until 5pm June 24 to cure a missing or mismatched signature on their return envelope. Once they provided a verifiable signature, their ballot was counted and their vote added to the results.

Over the last 10 days, Elections staff conducted the required 1% Manual Tally, a hand count that serves to confirm the accuracy of the machine tabulators. Staff also researched and confirmed the eligibility of ballots cast provisionally and remade ballots that needed to be duplicated because of damage or characteristics like red ink or stray marks that would interfere with a tabulator's ability to scan and record the votes.

"This election was different in that we had the new legally required 13-day deadline for counting most of the ballots," said Clerk-Recorder Elaina Cano this morning. "At the same time, we saw a change in the flow of ballots coming in because so many people waited to vote just before or on Election Day. That meant a compressed timeline for processing and scanning many, many thousands of mail ballots."

Cano pointed out that while turnout is typically lower in a primary election, SLO County voters did post a turnout rate of over 55 percent, which is more than six percentage points higher than the last gubernatorial primary, in June 2022. Statewide, turnout for this election stands at 40.9 percent.

"SLO County continues to rank among the highest in overall turnout, which I think speaks to the engagement of our voters as well as the faith they have in our local elections processes," said Cano. "I'm proud of our voters, our staff, and all of the community members who stepped up and came together to ensure a successful election."
