ABA Foundation Honors North Carolina Banker Aaron Slate with George Bailey Distinguished Service Award

WASHINGTON - The American Bankers Association Foundation today announced that Aaron Slate, market president for Truist in Asheville, N.C. has been awarded the 2026 George Bailey Distinguished Service Award. This national award recognizes a non-CEO bank employee who demonstrates outstanding service to their community. Slate will be honored at ABA's Annual Convention in Salt Lake City on Oct. 27.

Slate was selected for his leadership in helping Western North Carolina communities respond to and recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene. As communities confronted damage to their homes, businesses, and infrastructure, Slate worked to connect Truist employees, customers, nonprofit organizations and local businesses with essential resources and financial assistance. He was also instrumental in the rollout of Truist Cares for Western North Carolina, a three-year, $725 million initiative focused on helping the region's communities recover and build long-term resilience.

"True leadership reveals itself in moments of adversity, and Aaron's response following Hurricane Helene demonstrated exceptional compassion and dedication," said Rob Nichols, ABA president and CEO. "His efforts helped guide communities through uncertainty and brought together businesses, nonprofits and local leaders to support recovery. Aaron's impact will be felt throughout Western North Carolina for a long time to come."

In the storm's immediate aftermath, Slate helped lead Truist's local response, connecting employees with emergency assistance and helping to maintain access to financial services amid widespread outages, allowing residents to purchase necessities and businesses to remain operational. Truckloads of emergency supplies were delivered to affected communities, while the West Asheville branch served as a community resource hub offering mobile showers and laundry facilities to residents without water service.

"Bankers play a critical role as trusted partners during times of uncertainty, and Aaron exemplified that responsibility every day of the recovery process," said Travis Rhodes, regional president for Truist. "His leadership helped connect people with the resources they needed while strengthening the communities we call home."

"I am honored to receive the George Bailey Distinguished Service Award and grateful to everyone who has been part of Western North Carolina's recovery journey," said Slate. "Our communities' resilience in the face of tremendous challenges has been truly inspiring. This recognition belongs to the many individuals and organizations who came together to help our region recover, rebuild and emerge stronger for the future."

Following the storm, Slate continued supporting the region's recovery alongside nonprofit partners, business owners and civic leaders, helping connect communities with financial, philanthropic and volunteer resources to foster housing recovery, small-business stability, infrastructure improvements and long-term economic resilience.

"Aaron did more than just respond to a crisis," said Lindsay Torrico, executive director, ABA Foundation. "He helped restore confidence in communities facing an incredibly difficult recovery. His ability to listen, build partnerships and turn compassion into meaningful action has inspired others to serve. Aaron represents banking at its best, and we are proud to recognize his exceptional leadership."

The George Bailey Distinguished Service Award is part of the ABA Foundation's Community Commitment Awards program, which recognizes banks and bankers who make meaningful contributions to their communities.
