Youth Day in South Africa commemorates the bravery of young people who stood up against oppression during the Soweto Uprising in 1976. This day not only honours their legacy but also celebrates the successes of our future leaders.
To celebrate, Grindrod recently hosted an inspiring gathering with beneficiaries of the Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust (CRET), where Xolani Mbambo, CEO of Grindrod, and other colleagues shared their career journeys and insights. Students and alumni, such as Thobani Nyathikazi, a law graduate from UKZN, highlighted their commitments to community engagement and personal development. He said: "You chose to invest in a village boy who had dreams but no means. Today, I can connect with professionals, make an impact, and give back to others. One of the greatest lessons I have learned is that one should never wait for others to show you kindness-be the one to live it, lead it, and give it."
Sinethemba Cibane, a graduate and the first in her family to attend university or own a laptop, spoke about how educational opportunities have transformed her life.
These stories reflect the determination of today's youth as they strive for a better future. Organisations like CRET and donor companies play a crucial role in supporting their aspirations.
As we celebrate Youth Day, let us commit to fostering environments where young people can thrive.
Happy Youth Day, South Africa!
