What Is The True Hidden Price Of KLA Stock

Investors are currently paying 47.7 times trailing twelve-month earnings for shares of KLA (KLAC). That figure relies on a measure of adjusted earnings that adds back stock-based compensation after tax. While that represents a steep price for one year of profit, the picture shifts when measured against estimates for the next two years. So how much are you really paying for each dollar of the profit still ahead?

KLA's Multiple On Estimated Net Income

Consensus forecasts project KLA will earn $7.2 billion in fiscal 2027, which ends in June 2027. At today's share price, the stock trades at 33.7 times that profit. The forecast rises to $8.7 billion for fiscal 2028, pulling the valuation multiple down to 27.6. By comparison, KLA generated $5.1 billion in profit over the last twelve months, giving the stock its current trailing multiple of 47.7.

Those forward multiples offer an accurate read on valuation only if KLA actually hits the estimated targets. The fiscal 2028 outlook carries notable uncertainty. For that year, the gap between the highest and lowest per-share estimates equals 24.6% of the consensus figure.

How Much KLA Must Sell, And At What Margin

Wall Street expects KLA to reach $18.2 billion in revenue during fiscal 2027. That represents an increase of about a third over the $13.6 billion the company recorded during the last twelve months. The consensus forecast then projects another 20.1% increase for fiscal 2028. For context, the company posted sales growth of 11.7% over the last twelve months.

Looking at the near term, management guided revenue to $4 billion, plus or minus $200 million, for the pending September quarter. That target exceeds the record $3.66 billion KLA reported for the June quarter. Executives linked that recent performance in part to rising investment in AI infrastructure.

Analysts also expect KLA to retain more of each revenue dollar as profit. The consensus forecast models a net margin of 39% for fiscal 2027, compared with the 36% the company reported for fiscal 2026 on reported net income. That reported profit is lower than the adjusted $5.1 billion behind the 47.7 trailing multiple. Both figures are measured as net income over sales. By fiscal 2028, the forecast margin edges up to 40%. Investors must note that this expanding margin is an assumption rather than a confirmed result.

KLA Faces Costlier Memory And Long Lead Times

Higher memory costs for its systems present an ongoing challenge for KLA. On their July 28, 2026 call, executives noted that a richer services mix and manufacturing scale helped offset these expenses during the June quarter. Management expects memory costs to remain elevated through calendar 2027. The company cannot easily adjust prices on existing orders, and sets new prices when launching new products, management said. If memory costs stay high, KLA's net margin and total profit could fall short of consensus forecasts.

Supply constraints pose an additional risk to sales. Lead times across KLA operations run about 12 months, while some products require 18 to 24 months. Management noted that quarter-to-quarter growth in the first half of calendar 2026 was slower because of shortages of materials with long lead times. A repeat of those delays would push out sales and leave fiscal 2027 results below current forecasts.

The current valuations on fiscal 2027 and fiscal 2028 earnings offer a fair picture of what you pay only if KLA hits consensus targets. The projected net margin represents the most vulnerable part of that forecast. If the margin misses the mark, the stock becomes a riskier bet, priced for profit the company has not yet earned. KLA's reported net margin for the September quarter is the number to watch.

There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
