On Friday, September 26th, following repeated urgent appeals by Minister for Agriculture Armands Krauze to EU officials and detailed information provided by the Ministry of Agriculture to the European Commission (EC) on the extensive damage caused to Latvian agriculture by this year's unfavorable climatic conditions, the EC decided to grant Latvian farmers 4,2 million euros in EU emergency support.
Minister for Agriculture Armands Krauze: "This year's adverse weather - severe spring frosts and prolonged rainfall since May - has in many parts of Latvia completely or partially destroyed the harvest, causing major losses for farmers and threatening the economic viability of agricultural enterprises. On a daily basis, the Ministry of Agriculture collected and reported damage assessments to the European Commission. I also appealed for emergency support both at the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council and in direct conversations with EU officials. I am pleased that our call for support has been acknowledged."
The 4,2 million euros in EU emergency support allocated to Latvia must be paid out to farmers by April 30th, 2026. The Ministry of Agriculture has already begun work on developing the conditions for disbursing the support and will start discussions with farmers' organizations on the eligibility criteria and practical implementation.
