From Eversong's gold-lit boughs to Zul'Aman's shadowed ruins, the road to Midnight is paved with echoes. Here's how familiar lands and legends return-changed by time, scarred by war, and poised to face the Void.
Whether you joined World of Warcraft from the beginning, took your first steps through the Dark Portal into Outland in The Burning Crusade, or arrived later to pick up on the story of Azeroth through Lorewalker Cho, we're all on this journey together-and what a journey it's been… and continues to be. In Midnight, we find ourselves back where many of our fondest memories were forged and where new ones are made with familiar places, faces, and stories brought to life once more.
Quel'Thalas, the ancient kingdom of the high elves, stands at the heart of both The Burning Crusade and Midnight. In The Burning Crusade, we witness the aftermath of the Lich King's ambitions: the scar carved through Eversong Woods and Silvermoon City, and the corruption of the high elves' wellspring of power-the Sunwell. To protect his people from the corruption of the Sunwell, Prince Kael'thas destroyed it, leaving the people of Silvermoon to go into withdrawal as their source of power was cut off. Betrayed and abandoned by the Alliance in the face of the Scourge, the survivors rename themselves the sin'dorei ("children of the blood") and cast their lot with the Horde.
Led by Grand Magister Rommath, the magisters return to Silvermoon and bring Kael'thas's radical new teachings-offering the afflicted blood elves a new source of magic to sustain them. The magisters begin reclaiming and rebuilding much of Silvermoon City, and their heightened arcane power helps drive back the Scourge across their homeland.
Quel'Thalas is rich with story but much of it has long been experienced differently depending on your faction-and Silvermoon City has never truly opened its gates to the Alliance before.
Time heals many wounds, including the Dead Scar left by the Scourge invasion. Yet even as Eversong's gold returns, pockets of death and darkness linger-out of sight, but never truly gone.
If you've walked these roads in The Burning Crusade, you remember the hush beneath Eversong's golden canopy-and the unease that followed as the trees thinned toward the Ghostlands. Those same shadows still whisper at the edges of the kingdom.
Your journey begins in a revitalized Eversong Woods as the sin'dorei defend their homeland-not only against the Void, but against threats both familiar and new.
Blending the original Eversong Woods with the Ghostlands, the zone expands and connects to the Eastern Kingdoms in a seamless experience. You can take to the skies to skyride above glittering blood elf spires and golden forest canopies-seeing Quel'Thalas from a new vantage point.
Iconic locations like the Sunwell Plateau and the Ghostlands carry tales of loss, hope, and arcane legacy. Silvermoon's structures stand restored, the Sunwell's glow burns bright once more, and its people move with renewed purpose.
The capital of Quel'Thalas and home of the blood elves, Silvermoon City is a beacon of magic and power. Rising in the northern reaches of the Eastern Kingdoms, it was built upon land once held sacred by trolls. Nearly destroyed during the Scourge invasion, the city stands restored and rebuilt through the careful use of arcane power. While Silvermoon remains a Horde capital, the Alliance is invited to aid in defending the Sunwell as Xal'atath's designs and the Void's pressure close in. Portions of the city remain exclusive to Horde adventurers. Explore Silvermoon City in our previously published article.
North of Silvermoon City is the Isle of Quel'Danas where the Sunwell is found along with an updated version of The Magister's Terrace dungeon.
The Sunwell-a glorious fount of arcane energy-has a tumultuous past and a fraught future. It becomes a focal point once more in Midnight as Xal'atath and the forces of the Void seek to claim it, while the Army of the Light moves to bolster its defenses.
In The Burning Crusade, Windrunner Spire was little more than a broken tower on the coast. In Midnight, you can step inside the famed home of the Windrunner family, perched along the southwestern shoreline it is a place steeped in loss, memory, and unfinished business.
Once the Hallowed home of the Windrunner family, Windrunner Spire now mirrors the scarred relationship between Alleria, Sylvanas, and Vereesa. Animosity during a reunion at the home drove suffering and grief into a haunted manifestation that binds the spirits there, unable to find peace.
It's a chance to step into a storied family's past-even after all this time.
Seething with hatred for his ancient enemies in the Alliance-and contempt for the Horde who allied with the blood elves-Zul'jin rallied his trolls and sealed the Amani animal gods' power within his strongest warriors, hungry for vengeance.
As the Horde and the Alliance waged war against Illidan Stormrage's forces, Warlord Zul'jin and his Amani prepared to march on Quel'Thalas. Bitter enemies of the blood elves, they waited for the moment to launch a full assault. With Quel'Thalas's soldiers fighting in Outland, that moment finally arrived.
Zul'jin was a cunning leader, and his campaign was fueled by both hatred and strategy. The blood elves' recent pledge to the Horde brought new power and resources, and Zul'jin feared those allies would eventually turn their gaze toward the Amani empire.
Within Zul'Aman, Amani priests performed rituals to harness their loa's might. These ancient gods, and their blessings were stolen by Malacrass and suffused the trolls' ranks-subsuming the power of the loa. This act would ultimately damage the connection of the trolls to their gods and sever their link.
Unwilling to fight a war on the two fronts of Outland and Quel'Thalas, the Horde turned to its mightiest champions. They stormed Zul'Aman, not to meet an army head-on, but to cut off the serpent's head. Zul'jin and his priests fell before they could reach Quel'Thalas.
What was once a dungeon has expanded into a fully realized zone. Jungle paths and a rich troll culture await to be explored in depth, and the loa you once faced are revealed in fuller legend as the Amani seek to reconnect with their gods.
Veterans of The Burning Crusade may remember carving a path through Zul'Aman's warbands under the loa's watchful gaze-striking fast, pushing deeper, and refusing to give the Amani time to regroup. In Midnight, that same urgency returns, but the jungle answers back in ways it never did before.
Volatile neighbors to the blood elves, the Amani trolls reside in their capital of Zul'Aman. Proud and unbowed, they have fought fiercely for their land through hardship and loss. In Midnight, you journey deeper into their history and culture as you explore ancient forests, steep mountains, and storm-soaked ruins. Along the way, you contend not only with the Amani, but with rival forest tribes that share their roots, their loa, and their grudges.
Meet Zul'jin's grandchildren: Zul'jarra and Zul'jan. Zul'jarra leads the Amani, while her brother serves as adviser. The uneasy peace between the Amani and the blood elves begins to fray as the Void drives wedges between nations. It falls to you to venture into this old land-and learn what the Amani are willing to awaken to survive.
Zul'jarra searches for a way to help her people withstand the oncoming Void. Cut off from the loa and strained by old tensions with the neighboring blood elves, the Amani struggle to push back the darkness. You explore abandoned, overgrown loa temples-Akil'zon (eagle), Halazzi (lynx), Jan'alai (dragonhawk), and Nalorakk (bear)-as you uncover their stories and work to restore the bond between troll and loa.
Many of the familiar faces from the past have returned bringing with them their wisdom, their tales, and their many scars. Here are just some of whom you'll encounter.
Mentioned but maybe not seen very much before, these characters come into the light in Midnight.
You'll find many more familiar names and faces at the Sunwell as they answer the call to defend Azeroth. You can also hang out with the likes of Danath Trollbane and Kurdran Wildhammer among others in the Arcantina.
