New Brunswick Appoints Experienced Prosecutor as Municipal Judge

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (January 9, 2025) - Lorraine J. Nielsen, a prosecutor with extensive experience in Middlesex County and beyond, has been appointed as the City's newest municipal judge. The City Council made this appointment at its Dec. 30 meeting.

Nielsen's resume includes serving as a prosecutor for 21 of the 25 municipalities in Middlesex County and several towns in Monmouth and Mercer counties. The Middlesex County Bar Association recognized her legal expertise and named her the "2023 Municipal Court Practice Attorney of the Year."

Nielsen assumed the role of Associate Judge, filling the vacancy left by the retirement of Judge Philip A. Borow, effective on Dec. 31.

Throughout her two-decade career, Nielsen has held key positions in various municipalities, including Milltown, Spotswood, Helmetta, South River, North Brunswick, and East Brunswick. She has also served as acting prosecutor for Plainsboro and Cranbury, and as a substitute prosecutor for numerous towns across the region.

Beyond her prosecutorial work, Nielsen participated in the Blue Cares Program, a valuable initiative within the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office's Operation Helping Hand Program. This program focuses on establishing drug courts in municipalities like New Brunswick. These courts offer defendants with substance-use disorders the opportunity to access vital treatment and support services.

Nielsen is a graduate of Seton Hall University School of Law.
