Extreme weather response ends March 16

With temperatures expected to improve next week, the City of Edmonton will deactivate its extreme weather response on Sunday, March 15, at noon.The final night of operation for the expanded overnight shuttle service (west route) will be March 14, with service starting in the evening and ending the morning of March 15.

The extreme weather response was activated on
Thursday, March 12,in response to the extreme cold.

The deactivation of the extreme weather response is being announced to give individuals time to adjust their plans for accessing shelter.

Once the extreme weather response is deactivated, the following services will remain accessible:

Winter shelter shuttle
  • Two shelter shuttles will continue to operate nightly along the north and south routes from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. until March 31, providing transportation to available shelter spaces.Route maps are available at edmonton.ca/ExtremeWeather.
    • Note: From 12:45 to 3:30 a.m., the north and south winter shelter shuttles will focus on transporting people from transit stations to shelters based on need and are not on a set route.
  • A 24/7 Hope Mission shuttle will operate on a westbound route until March 31, providing transportation to shelters, support services and healthcare providers.
  • Support staff will be on each bus to help passengers access available shelters and provide referrals to other services.
City facilities
Public City facilities and libraries will remain open during regular operating hours to anyone needing respite from the extreme cold.

What you can do
  • If you are concerned about someone who is outside in the cold, you can take the following steps to help:
  • Call 911 if someone is in serious distress or in cases of emergency.
  • Call 211 and press 3 to access 24/7 Crisis Diversion non-emergency support for shelter, intoxication and mental health concerns.
