BOZEMAN - All are invited to a free laser light and science show on Wednesday, April 16, to celebrate World Quantum Day. The show, which will feature sound, lasers, light and the mysterious world of quantum science, begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Willson Auditorium, 404 W. Main St., Bozeman. No prior understanding of quantum science is necessary to enjoy the show. All ages are welcome, and tickets are not required.
The show is performed by Glenn Govertsen, also known as Mr. G, a retired physics teacher from Missoula who has entertained audiences around the world with his engaging science performances. The event is organized by Montana State University's Applied Quantum CORE - or QCORE - and its education and workforce development team in the Science Math Resource Center, part of MSU's College of Education, Health and Human Development. Event organizers noted that the show will include flashing and strobing lights that may affect photosensitive people.
World Quantum Day is celebrated each year in April, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has declared 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology.
At MSU and around the Gallatin Valley, quantum scientists and engineers are harnessing the intriguing properties of extremely small particles to create faster, more sensitive and more precise systems in electronics, including sensors, location systems, computers and medical equipment. MSU's QCORE research focuses on quantum computing, quantum sensing and quantum communications. It is supported by funding from the Air Force Research Laboratory.
