Construction Resumes on Boronda Road

Construction Resumes on Boronda Road

Published on June 04, 2025

Construction on Phase 1 of the Boronda Road Congestion Relief Project has officially resumed following a delay caused by weather conditions. Crews have entered a preparation period to restart the project, focusing on installing drainage systems and relocating underground utilities. The preparation will take place largely outside the existing roadways, resulting in minimal traffic impact over the next several weeks.

Preliminary work at the site will include re-staking boundaries, clearing and removing vegetation and debris, and compacting the ground to support construction equipment and trucks. Unloading of equipment and the use of spotters may occur just outside roadway boundaries, and drivers and pedestrians should remain alert in these zones.

Community Meeting

A community meeting is scheduled for later this fall to update residents on the project's progress and gather feedback. More details about the meeting will be announced as the date approaches.

The Boronda Congestion Relief Project

The Boronda Congestion Relief Project is more than construction project, it's about creating safer roads, enhanced accessibility, and preparing for the Future Growth Area. Roundabouts are designed to be pedestrian safety as they force drivers to slow down. The benefits of roundabouts include reduced accidents, reduced delays, fuel consumption, noise, and pollution. Here is a summary of the benefits:

Safety:

· Fewer severe crashes,

· Fewer fatalities

· Left turn and right-angle crashes are eliminated

Pedestrian Safety:

· Roundabouts have a split island - safety for pedestrians and bicyclists

· Crosswalk and flashing lights are included (High-Intensity Activated Cross-Walk Beacon)

Time Savings:

· A 50% increase in traffic capacity

· Reduced delays compared to traditional signalized intersections.

Environmentally Friendly:

· Reduces pollution from vehicles not waiting at traffic signals

· Reduces noise

· Reduces fuel consumption and emissions

The overall project includes the widening of East Boronda Road into a four-lane roadway. and the construction of 4 multi-lane roundabouts at the intersections of McKinnon Street, El Dorado Drive, Natividad Road, and Independence Boulevard. Phase 1 will construct the roundabout at the intersection of McKinnon Street, and other related improvements from Dartmouth Way to a point east of McKinnon Street.

The City currently has three constructed roundabouts at East Alisal Street and Skyway Boulevard, East Alisal Street and Bardin Road and Alisal Road and Sconberg Parkway. We encourage drivers to visit these sites to gain a feeling for driving roundabouts. Though the Boronda Road roundabouts will be larger, the driving experience will be similar.
