UST Launches New Graduate Certificate in AI for Business Leaders

In Fall 2026, the University of St. Thomas - Houston (UST) will launch a new Graduate Certificate in AI for Business Leaders through the Cameron School of Business.

Designed for graduate students, working professionals and organizational leaders, the 12-credit hour program addresses the growing need for practical, strategic understanding of artificial intelligence in today's rapidly evolving business landscape. The key differentiator to UST's program is this education is done with ethical treatment of the human person and a deep philosophical exploration of what AI means for the business world.

Dr. Beena George, interim dean of the Cameron School of Business, emphasizes this distinctive, ethics-grounded approach to AI is needed in business.

"Whether you're advancing your career or preparing to lead change, understanding how to apply AI responsibly is now essential," she said. "This certificate bridges strategy, ethics and application, equipping professionals across industries to turn AI potential into meaningful, responsible innovation."

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries, business leaders are increasingly expected to make informed decisions about AI adoption, manage AI-enabled teams and navigate complex ethical and regulatory challenges.

The new certificate program is designed to meet this demand by providing a focused, high-impact credential that combines:

  • Strategic AI leadership
  • Ethical and governance frameworks
  • Hands-on application of AI tools and automation

"Unlike a full MBA program, this certificate offers a streamlined pathway for professionals seeking immediate, practical skills to lead AI initiatives within their organizations," Dr. George said.

Rooted in UST's Catholic, liberal arts mission and commitment to human dignity, the program stands out for its emphasis on ethical, human-centered innovation. A cornerstone of the curriculum is Philosophy of AI, a graduate-level course that explores critical questions surrounding intelligence, moral agency, and the societal impact of AI.

"This foundation ensures that graduates are not only technically capable but also prepared to lead responsibly in an AI-driven world," Dr. George said.

The four-course (12 credit hours) certificate includes:

  • Philosophy of AI - Examines ethical, philosophical and societal implications of artificial intelligence
  • AI for Strategic Advantage - Focuses on leveraging AI for innovation, competitive positioning and organizational transformation
  • Strategic AI Governance, Law and Ethics - Covers responsible AI practices, regulatory frameworks and executive oversight
  • AI Development and Automation for Business Leaders - Provides hands-on experience building AI-powered workflows and applications using modern tools

Dr. George is delighted to educate students on the integration of technological advances and human formation.

"Together, these courses equip students with both strategic insight and practical capability, enabling them to translate business needs into AI-driven solutions," she said. "This new certificate reflects UST's continued commitment to preparing leaders who can navigate complexity, driven innovation and lead with integrity."

By integrating ethics, strategy and hands-on application, the program positions graduates to lead AI initiatives within their organizations; make informed and responsible decisions about emerging technologies; and bridge the gap between technical teams and executive leadership.

"The Graduate Certificate in AI for Business Leaders represents a forward-looking addition to UST's academic portfolio, aligning with industry needs while staying grounded in the University's mission," Dr. George said. "We look forward to UST continuing to lead the way in the tension between AI and the human person."
